The education of young academics is an integral part of the PhoNa initiative. By the combination of cutting-edge fundamental research with intense training, the program will contribute a substantial share of young-career researchers specialized in optics, photonics, and material sciences to the German job market within the next years. Ultimately, young scientists involved in PhoNa are trained for technical or scientific positions in industry and academia. Particularly, PhoNa comprises a Graduate School for Photonic Nanomaterials which is collocated under the umbrella of the umbrella of the Abbe School of Photonics (ASP). The PhoNa doctoral students receive strong support by full-scale education programs with multidisciplinary coverage of the field of optics, photonics, and photonic materials, from upstream scientific aspects to engineering and applications in major sectors of economy.  Workshops, seminars, colloquia, symposiums, and lecture series are organized throughout the whole year. The international ASP guest professor program not only provides an overview of top-level research, but also covers the broad spectrum of optical and associated material sciences presented by internationally renowned speakers. Together with the ASP, the PhoNa Graduate School aims to prepare its doctoral students for their future tasks within and outside academia as well as in today's society.
